Hatha yoga is shown to improve the biochemical and oxidative stress profiles and anti-oxidant status in type 2 diabetic patients, according to research papers shared by an Indian yoga university, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA).
At a 2017 conference in Singapore about the benefits of Yoga and Ayurveda in combating diabetes, a forum of doctors, ayurvedic experts and yogis shared results of studies conducted on diabetic patients across the world. They talked about the efficacy of Hatha yoga exercise on fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, oxidative stress markers and antioxidant status in type 2 diabetes patients. Reference was made to a study where participants were made to do yoga sessions that consisted of 20 minutes of pranayama (breathing exercises), 25 minutes of dynamic warm-up exercises, 60 minutes of asanas and 15 minutes of supine relaxation in savasana. The main speaker at the event was Dr. Nagendra, the vice-chancellor of S-VYASA university, who’s a former NASA scientist, has authored more than 100 research papers on yoga and is also a yoga teacher to India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
