India’s celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar was a delight to speak with in Singapore last month. She was emphatic, assertive and visibly proud of her claim that a healthy person is one who follows his or her grandmothers’ recipes. Scroll down to watch the video.

With a celebrity Bollywood clientele backing her and claiming to have lost weight because of her diet recommendations, there was no stopping Rujuta from shunning western beliefs. She asked the audience to embrace ghee, cashewnuts and the sweetness of a banana, and also challenged researchers about health benefits of red wine, calling them “bold” to keep repeating a “familiar lie”.

“There is unlimited evidence that shows that there is nothing that wine does which is good for the heart,” she said.

At the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held in Singapore on January 6 and 7, 2018, Rujuta was invited as part of the Health & Wellness space to speak about nutrition. She was on a roll, and she played beautifully to a packed audience. They loved her!

What I admired most about her was her nonchalance. She clearly doesn’t care about glorified research on ghee or gluten. One can only hope her audience is smart enough to understand that moderation is the key when it comes to diet (however ‘super’ a food may be) and some exercise goes a long way too.
