At the beginning, your mind needs to hold on to something because it cannot stop all thoughts from entering. The best strategy in meditation is to focus on a chosen thought, image or action, and whenever you get distracted by other thoughts, gently pull the mind back to your chosen focus. With repetition, this increases concentration and decreases other unwanted thoughts from entering your mind. Meditation becomes easier with time and practice, like any other activity in life.
